Best affordable espresso machine, from all of our combined lists

Are you looking for the hands-down most affordable way to get a fully functioning espresso bar set-up in your home?

Well let me tell you a little secret… If you are a regular reader of my site, you’ve probably heard me hammering this into your head before. But if you are brand-new, listen up. This will be the difference between you getting most out of your coffee… or else wasting your money on another piece of junk that is barely better than cheap instant coffee.

It’s all about the grind.

According to some of the sticklers on Reddit (and these types are usually super particular), fresh ground coffee is a clear winner over the preground alternative.

Why is this? The answer lies in how quickly ground coffee goes stale. Suffice it to say, it’s in a matter of weeks unless extensive vacuum sealing is applied to the ground coffee.

A simple smell test will make the difference clear. Fresh is just far more flavorful, robust, and invigorating.

I’m not saying that I’ll never use preground coffee again, in fact the K-Cups which I unashamedly use during busier days, are preground.

But when I’ve got a morning all to myself, the kids are out of the way, and I can really throw myself into the sensual experience of grinding, brewing, and steaming my own espresso?

Nothing beats that experience, in terms of how rewarding it is to taste the sweet fruits of your hard work.

Nowadays I use a more expensive commercial espresso machine, but I’m a little bit obsessive. I made the space in my kitchen for it, and after some smart saving and budgeting, I was able to afford it. I would not recommend that everyone splurges and goes this route.

I think a more moderate budget is advisable for most people, and thus here are my picks for best affordable espresso machine.

Consider total costs.

When setting out what your ‘right’ price range is, consider that the entire budget should not go towards the espresso maker itself. You gotta factor in the cost of a good quality grinder and other accessories.

Remember what I said earlier? Grind is almost more important than the brew process itself. Maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but you’re really best off thinking of it as a 50/50 relationship. Some people even spend accordingly, and budget as much for their grinder as for their machine.

I have some grinder recommendations as well, so consider getting something in the mid-range, don’t just settle for the 20 dollar blade grinders you find at the grocery store.

The best affordable espresso machine for your particular budget should be one that accounts for these other costs.

Technique Matters

Good technique comes with practice and experience. Although this practice is fun and doesn’t really feel like work… you get to drink good coffee throughout.

But nevertheless, there is a learning curve, and the better you get the better results you will get from even ‘average’ level equipment.

This is why feel it is especially important to begin with a budget espresso maker, before working your way up.

Remember, these machines are generally built to last. So as long as you take care of it, and follow cleaning and maintenance instructions, you should be able to great resale value when you end up trading up for a more advanced model.

Or maybe you won’t. That’s totally fine! Maybe you’ll decide that you’re happy with your lower cost machine, or maybe you decide that’s its not worth the counter space and you’d rather go back to Starbucks every day.

Any of the best affordable espresso machines should hold their value.

I have compiled hours and hours of research and picked the best models off of my other lists to bring this guide to you today.

There are other, cheaper coffee machine alternatives.

Check out some of my other guides. There are a hundred other types of coffee makers on the market, all of which make a great cup of coffee. Although I personally love the hands-on, visceral, (dare I say sensual) feel of a fully manual, lever action espresso machine, I know that others would prefer the convenience and ease of simpler models.

And a lot of those models are far more afforable than even the cheapest espresso machine.

Will the results be the same? That’s up to you. I think there’s a time and place for everything. There are times where I want a coffee quick and conveniently, and there are other times where I want to take the time and savour the entire experience.

Do you think that you’ve got the best affordable espresso machine, and I missed it on this list? Please don’t hesitate to Contact Me. I’d love to hear from you!

Don’t forget Craigslist. Some of the best affordable espresso machine deals are the Used kind.

Ok, before I start let me please ask you to be careful when meeting anyone off the internet. Use your common sense, take someone with you (or at the very least let someone know that you’re going out and to check in on you later). It doesn’t matter if they’re advertising the best affordable espresso machine in the universe, if it seems shady… be smart about it and don’t go.

That being said, I’ve found some real steals between Craigslist and Ebay. Sometimes someone will use their espresso maker a couple of times and then decide that it isn’t right for them. Once I met a young lady who had gotten a great $500+ level model as a wedding gift. She had taken it out of the box and set it up on the kitchen counter fully excited and ready to use it.

Once I met a young lady who had gotten a great $500+ level model as a wedding gift. She had taken it out of the box and set it up on the kitchen counter fully excited and ready to use it. A year passed, and the machine had only collected dust from sitting around unused. It was a brand new machine, but it was too late to return and she had lost the box and the receipt. She sold it for $100 and was just happy to have it out of the house.

You need to test a used machine before buying

Again, make sure you feel SAFE, before entering someone’s house. Once you do, you should make them run the machine fully for you once and make a cup of coffee. The only exception to this is if the machine has never been used. If this is the case, make sure to ask plenty of questions about why they got the machine, why they are selling, etc…
